QUEEN ELIZABETH II

ROYAL QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Throughout her long reign Elizabeth II has sought to discharge her role with an enormous sense of duty. Her reign has experienced profound social and economic change. Within the royal family there have been numerous difficult experiences but despite all difficulties and testing times she has retained the respect of the nation.

The 1950s could be seen as the “golden age” for the Queen. It was an era of greater deference to royalty; in particular press intrusion was far less. The young Elizabeth was young and beautiful and the world looked upon her as a fairytale princess. She was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. It was the first Royal wedding to be televised and it gripped a nation enjoying the end of post war austerity and also the success of Edmund Hilary reaching peak of Mt Everest.

The 1960s saw remarkable social change. The advent of TV gave the public a greater insight into the life of the Royal family. With increased exposure the distance between the royal family and the public diminished. It created a real appetite for greater knowledge and information about royalty. This frenzy of media interest would later create real problems for the Royal family.

In the 1970s the queen celebrated her silver jubilee to widespread public interest and support. In the 1980s the focus of the royal family switched to Charles and Diana. In particular the media became increasingly fascinated with the Fairytale princess – Princess Diana. The 1990s saw a catalogue of problems for the queen and Elizabeth. In one Christmas message she referred memorably to an “annus horribilis” but in reality it would have been appropriate for many years. In particular the acrimonious break up of Princess Diana and Prince Charles divided the Royal family with reports saying the queen was less than sympathetic to princess Diana. The death of Princess Diana was a critical moment in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. The unprecedented outpouring of grief around the world left the queen looking rather aloof. Amidst intense pressure the Queen relented and after 3 days instructed the flag to be raised at half mast over Windsor.

In the past 10 years these dark days have been put behind. In 2002 there were very successful Golden Jubilee celebrations with a significant display of affection for both the queen and royal family. The Queen continues with a relentless round of official engagements. Despite nearing an age of 81 she appears remarkably mobile with little intent of passing the throne to Charles early.
